amp is the small native program that gives jam and tab a real audio path on Windows: your interface at driver latency, a Neural Amp Modeler capture on your headphones, a cabinet, drums and recording on one clock. You do not buy it and you do not set it up separately. It comes with the account and starts when you need it.
why there is a native engine at all
Browsers cannot do ASIO.
On Windows, audio through a browser takes a detour of up to half a second. You cannot play an amp like that. A DAW gets its low latency by owning the interface through its ASIO driver, and that is exactly what amp does.
Sound native, screen in the browser.
amp owns the audio: input, modeling, cabinet, drums, recording. The screen you look at, jam or tab, stays a web page and talks to amp on your own machine. Nothing audio-related goes through the internet.
Drums and recording never drift.
Because the drum machine and the recorder live in the same engine, they share one sample clock. That is why jam knows the bar grid exactly and why an exported clip lands on the grid in your DAW instead of a few milliseconds off.
bring your own NAM files.
amp runs Neural Amp Modeler captures, the open .nam format that the whole capture community shares. A set of freely licensed captures ships with it so there is sound out of the box. Your own captures, from your amp or from TONE3000 and friends, go into your models folder and show up in the list. Cabinet impulse responses work the same way; a few are included.
- ASIO input and output with your interface's buffer size; the latency is shown live, not guessed.
- NAM amp modeling and cabinet impulse response convolution, plus a noise gate.
- Drum machine with three sampled kits, click, count-in and a humanized feel, on the recording clock.
- Session recording of your dry signal as FLAC, with the wet sound re-rendered afterwards.
- Onset and pitch tracking that feeds jam's live notation and tab's play-it-in recording.
- A tuner, level meters and a clip warning so the take is usable later.
how it fits jam and tab
Plug in, pick a capture, start the drums. amp records the whole session, keeps the drum grid, and hands jam the notes as you play. The amp sound is only on your headphones; the recording stays dry, so you can change the tone tomorrow.
About jamWhen you would rather play the part than upload it, tab uses amp to record your guitar straight into the empty tab, with a proper amp sound while you play. Everything else in tab, uploading a mix, isolating the guitar, correcting, exporting, works in the browser without amp.
About tab- Windows 10 or 11. amp is a signed Windows program; no Mac build yet, and we say so.
- A USB audio interface with an ASIO driver. A Scarlett Solo is plenty; guitar goes in dry.
- Headphones or monitors on the interface. amp does not go through the Windows mixer.
- Not a plug-in. amp runs on its own next to the browser, not inside your DAW.
- Not a tone marketplace. It plays the captures you have; it does not sell them.
- Not a latency contest. It is as fast as your interface allows, and it tells you the number.
